Dr. Stephen Russell will chair a symposium on “The Anatomy of Medical Terminology”

Dr. Stephen Russell will chair a symposium on “The Anatomy of Medical Terminology” at the 20th Congress of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA 2022), organized by the world’s largest association of professional anatomists, in Istanbul, Turkey. “We have been teaching introductory and advanced courses in medical language from textbooks we have authored ourselves,” says Dr. Russell. “Unlike most medical terminology courses, our courses emphasize the Latin anatomical vocabulary and reinforce students’ learning of it by linking it to the Latin and Greek roots which combine to make up the huge body of English clinical medical terminology. In this respect, through our teaching we have been furthering one of IFAA’s important goals: to facilitate the ability of both anatomists and clinicians (as well as other medical specialists) to understand and fluently use the Latin phrases of medical terminology.” Another member of McMaster’s Classics Department, doctoral candidate Amanda Hardman, will take part in the symposium.
