This past March the Departments of Classics and Philosophy hosted Dr. Josiah Ober as their Harry Lyman Hooker Distinguished Visiting Professor.

You can now view Dr. Ober’s public lecture ‘Democracy before Liberalism’ on the McMaster Humanities YouTube Channel at the following link https://youtu.be/2qt3g4EbOPg

Dr. Ober is the Constantine Mitsotakis Professor of Political Science and Classics at Stanford University.  His work focuses on democracy, historical institutionalism, and political theory. One of the most influential ancient historians writing today, he has been called “the George Grote of our times”, bringing the perspective of antiquity to bear on questions of modern political thought and practice. He is the author of a number of books, most recently Democracy and Knowledge (2010, Princeton University Press) and The Rise and Fall of Classical Greece (2015, Princeton University Press).

The Faculty of Humanities invites distinguished speakers yearly to McMaster University to deliver innovative and thought-provoking lectures. This is made possible by the generous donation of Dr. Harry Lyman Hooker.
