This March the Departments of Classics and Philosophy will be hosting Dr. Josiah Ober as their Harry Lyman Hooker Distinguished Visiting Professor.

Dr. Josiah Ober is the Constantine Mitsotakis Professor of Political Science and Classics at Stanford University.  His work focuses on democracy, historical institutionalism, and political theory. One of the most influential ancient historians writing today, he has been called “the George Grote of our times”, bringing the perspective of antiquity to bear on questions of modern political thought and practice.

He is the author of a number of books, most recently Democracy and Knowledge (2010, Princeton University Press) and The Rise and Fall of Classical Greece (2015, Princeton University Press).

Dr. Ober’s public lecture will take place on March 17th at 1:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of the University Club. The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion at 3:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The Faculty of Humanities invites distinguished speakers yearly to McMaster University to deliver innovative and though-provoking lectures. This is made possible by the generous donation of Dr. Harry Lyman Hooker.
